Comprehensive Dentistry

Elmhurst General Dentist

Comprehensive dentistry involves the diagnosis and treatment of general conditions affecting the teeth, gums, and jaw. We emphasize quality preventive care because it allows us to diagnose and treat problems early while they’re small and utilize more conservative treatment plans. Early diagnosis also reduces your risk of needing more complex–often more painful and expensive–treatment in the future. Additionally, with our advanced technology and expertise, we can perform most procedures right here in our office.

Relief for TMJ and TMD

Does your jaw ache when you open wide or chew something tough? You could be suffering from TMJ Syndrome, a jaw disorder that causes frequent pain in the teeth, jaw, and neck. Other symptoms of TMJ Syndrome include chronic headaches, earaches, sensitivity in the teeth, and persistent jaw clicking or locking. Dr. Sullivan and our team can determine the cause of your TMJ pain by taking x-rays and performing a thorough examination of your bite, jaw joint, and facial muscles. Depending on the cause, we’ll then help you find a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Dr. Sullivan has undergone extensive training in this area and is a member of The American Equilibration Society (AES), which is the largest organization in the world that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of dental occlusion (bite problems) and disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated muscles.

Periodontal (Gum) Care

Periodontal disease

Gum disease is a serious problem among adults. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults over the age of 35. If your gums feel tender, look red and swollen, or bleed every time you floss, you could be at risk for gum disease. Untreated gum disease has been linked to other serious health problems, so it’s important to keep them healthy with biannual dental checkups and cleanings.

Gum disease used to require surgery more often than not, and while surgery is still sometimes the best option, we can now treat many cases with less invasive techniques.

  • Diagnosis of Gum Disease
  • Scaling and Root Planning (Deep Cleaning)
  • Long-Term Maintenance Plans

Relaxing Sedation Dentistry

Elmhurst Sedation Dentistry

Many of our patients suffer from some degree of dental anxiety. For that reason we offer both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is a colorless blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide gases with a pleasant, sweet smell and taste. By inhaling nitrous oxide, our patients can experiences a sense of well-being and relaxation, and it is effective in helping our patients who experience anxiety or fear about dental treatment feel more at ease. Nitrous oxide increases your pain threshold and it is also helpful for patients who have a strong gag reflex that interferes with dental treatment.

Oral conscious sedation, sometimes referred to as “relaxation dentistry,” is an option we offer to help patients become as comfortable as possible through a simple pill. Some people mistakenly call it “sleep dentistry,” but though you will feel very calm and relaxed during treatment, you will still be awake and able to respond. If you have felt fearful about dental treatment in the past, you are not alone. We want you to know that such feelings are not uncommon and people of any age can experience them. We also want you to know that we can help with oral conscious sedation! Thanks to conscious sedation, more patients can have all necessary treatment completed in one day and they regain alertness feeling refreshed. If these benefits sound like what you have been looking for, please contact us to learn more!

Please share your concerns with us, so we can make your dental visits as stress-free and as comfortable as possible.
